3 ways to improve near miss reporting in large organisations

1. Make it easy
People are busy so make it easy for them to report near misses. Sending a text message is much easier than filling a paper form out.
2. Feedback, feedback, feedback
'Thanks for taking the time to tell us about a near miss - we need this information to help keep people safe' - 'Following the near miss you told us about this is what we are going to do about it …'.
3. Culture
The safety triangle is well trodden ground for safety professionals but 'normal' people don't necessarily understand why reporting near misses is important - after all nothing actually happened. A good communication campaign can make a big difference here: Near miss + near miss + near miss = Accident.

Greenwashing

If Wikipedia is to be believed greenwashing is a bit like whitewashing but with green credentials. It means marketing a product or service as environmentally friendly when the reality is not quite that. The reason why organisations do this is pretty easy to understand - it is a whole load easier to stick a picture of a field on your product rather than make changes to the way your company operates. However, customers and shareholders are increasingly getting wise (or perhaps immune) to the ‘paint it green’ approach and are looking for more substantial measures.

We see organisations passing through 4 phases over time:

1. Paying lip service - “greenwashing”
2. Low hanging fruit - making the changes that are relatively easily made or relatively easily justified - you know change all your light bulbs to energy saving ones
3. Structural changes - once all the low hanging fruit has gone then organisations need to start to make changes that are perhaps more difficult to implement or where they payback may be much longer term or non-existent. Often these changes are enforced or encouraged with legislation.
4. Competitive advantage - Where organisations realise that doing “green” properly and being truly innovative can give them real competitive advantage.

New Client - Eddie Stobart chooses Rivo Software

Rivo is delighted to announce the successful installation of a risk-management solution with Stobart Group. Rivo now provides risk management software for Stobart Group, City Link, Wincanton and Scania UK.

As the UK’s leader in multimodal logistics, warehousing and biomass fuel sectors, Stobart Group is one of the most recognized and strongest brands in Britain, best known for its iconic Eddie Stobart trucks. With a road haulage fleet of some 2,280 trucks and over six million square feet of premium quality warehousing, Eddie Stobart has the best vehicle utilisation in the industry, helping to maximize efficiency and environmental benefits.

Stobart Group decided to replace its existing risk management system which was limited by flexibility. Rivo rapidly implemented the new system within 3 weeks using a powerful configuration tool which enables the user interface to meet exact requirements. The use of Stobart specific terminology within the system and the ability for the software to match Stobart’s existing processes means that user adoption and the quality of data input has already improved significantly.

Rivo Director Matt Duckhouse says, “Stobart Group was looking for a flexible, rapidly configured solution to meet its specific requirements. It needed a platform that would seamlessly integrate and support its existing processes and encourage high levels of user adoption, alongside instant results to demonstrate the reasons for implementing the system in the first place. This is a significant partnership for Rivo Software and confirms our methodology is successful across large scale, complex installations in very short timescales. We’re delighted to welcome Stobart Group to the Rivo community.”

New Client - Rivo Plans to Debug Risk Management for Rentokil

Rivo Software signs 3 year contract with one of the world’s largest providers of business services, Rentokil Initial.

Rentokil Initial formed almost 80 years ago; the company has grown to become a longest-established, best known and most trusted pest control service provider.

Rentokil currently operates a group wide Health & Safety ‘scorecard’ to report on compliance. The need to extend the scorecards to all business levels across the group was recognized; consequently Rentokil approached Rivo Software on the recommendation of an existing client.

Rentokil wanted the ability to drill-down within reports, detailed trend reporting and visibility of performance against KPI’s. Due to the nature of the organization, ensuring compliance across all business units and location levels is extremely important for audit ability and ‘SHE HEALTH CHECKS’. Managing corrective actions and ensuring instances of non-compliance are resolved improves the quality, scope and breadth of the Health, Safety and Environmental compliance reporting, heavily impacting on Corporate Social Responsibility and reducing the number of prosecutions by ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Rivo Director Matt Duckhouse says, “We are so pleased that Rentokil were recommended to use Rivo though a longstanding client, City Link. After seeing Rivo Safeguard for themselves, they contacted us to investigate the provision of a system to suit their specific requirements, improving the way in which they currently report on compliance within Health and Safety. A fantastic achievement for Rivo and further confirms our methodology is successful across large scale, complex installations, with multiple language requirements. We’re delighted to welcome Rentokil to the Rivo community.”
