Bedfordshire & Luton Fire & Rescue Service (BLFRS) has been recognised for its commitment to Health and Safety with success at the prestigious SHP IOSH Awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel, London last night, Wednesday 22 October.
BLFRS’s ‘We All Come Home’ campaign was judged to have outshone its rivals in the Best Health and Safety Achievement in Health Care & Emergency Services category. The aim of the campaign was to reduce the number of firefighter fatalities and increase awareness of effective Health and Safety. This was done by hosting discussion groups on firefighter safety to give crews the opportunity to provide feedback on Health and Safety issues. BLFRS then looked at the types of incidents where there had been firefighter fatalities, what steps had been taken by the Service to ensure operational safety prior to, during and after an incident. Then, using Rivo’s Safeguard system, they analysed accident statistics and the results from recent active monitoring initiatives. Since the campaign was completed last year BLFRS has had a marked reduction (25%) in the number of accidents to firefighters whilst on the fire ground at operational incidents.
Station Manager, Martin Statham, responsible for Health & Safety at Beds Fire, commented: “We are extremely proud to win this award which recognises all the hard work the Health and Safety team here have put in and the commitment of senior management to raise awareness of Health and Safety across the organisation. We are now looking forward to taking the campaign to the next level and ensuring the campaign is embedded into every aspect of operational activity.”
