About the University of Bedfordshire
The University of Bedfordshire is the largest higher education institution in the county.
- Students 19,000
- Number of locations: 420
- 2009 saw a £60m investment which included a £6m Campus Centre that houses a £4.5m 280-seat theatre, and an £8m Physical Education and Sport Science Centre that is set to train athletes in the 2012 Olympics.
Project Summary
The University were looking for a consistent way of capturing data in relation to accidents, incidents and near-misses and also perform trend analysis. Rivo Safeguard was selected to provide the University instant visibility of all accident and incident information.
The University of Bedfordshire was established in August 2006 following the merger between the University of Luton and De Montfort University’s Bedford campus and is now the largest higher education institution in the county.
Business Needs
The University has 19,000 students, over 1,000 staff, 2 main campuses and a number of educational buildings including 9 research institutes. The University was looking to improve the way accidents and incidents were logged and reported. The paper-based system they had was becoming unwieldy and they faced issues around the lack of a centralised Health and Safety data repository. Reports were hard to extract and time consuming to compile which made analysing trends very difficult.
There were no systems in place for creating reminders for Health and Safety related issues and the University had no way of linking associated areas of Health and Safety, for example, reviewing a Risk Assessment following the investigation of an accident.
Solution
The introduction of Safeguard’s Accident and Incident Management module has enabled the University to vastly improve efficiency as key risk areas can now easily be identified. Information relating to accidents and incidents can be shared across the organisation quickly and easily so that trends can be spotted. It has also helped to raise
awareness of Health & Safety throughout the University.
Return on Investment
University Safety Advisor, Tonya Overal, explained some of the benefits that Safeguard has brought to the University: “Rivo has rejuvenated the system of reporting accidents and incidents across the University of Bedfordshire and is a million miles away from the old paper-based system that was in use previously. As well as reducing the need to store paper records, Rivo’s Safeguard system actively encourages the investigation of accidents and incidents. The software is simple to use and training takes minutes. We are now able to produce credible reports for our Health and Safety Committee meetings.”
